Otakar Sevcik (1852-1934) had an obsession with the bow, writing countless studies for his students in conservatories across Europe and the United States. This class will focus on the first eight studies in the Op. 3 text, 40 variations. Over the course of two months, we will examine the precise technique and desired sound associated with the bow strokes prescribed for these variations. There is a reason these studies echo through the halls of the finest music schools: they are a direct path to cultivating and controlling your sound. Sevcik is the real deal!

Each 60-70 minute class will combine guided practice, individual attention, and time for Q&A.

Requirements: A copy of Sevcik Opus 3 and a metronome. Open to early intermediate through advanced students. Students should be comfortable with the notes (cellists will need some tenor clef). Since this is a bow technique seminar, the left hand should be fairly secure so we can concentrate on the task at hand. Not sure where you fit in? Feel free to email info@tamarackarts.org and we’ll figure it out!

Enrollment limited to 6 students. All stringed instruments welcome. In the winter and spring, we will tackle the remaining studies over the course of several more classes. If demand is high, we will run the course again!

Online. Sundays at 6pm Eastern time. October 1, 8, 15 and 22. November 5, 12, and 19.

Faculty: Emily Wright and guest instructors tbd.

Classes should be attended in a quiet, well lit place, preferably using a computer or tablet connected to high speed internet. Zoom setting “Original Sound for Musicians” MUST be enabled in advance. At the beginning of every session, you will have to tick the box in the upper left corner to prevent Zoom’s noise cancellation from inadvertently silencing you! For the most effective and enjoyable experience, do not use the web app; instead, download Zoom onto your device. Settings like Original Sound are only available on the downloaded version.
